The Focus on Sickle Cell (FoSCel) Foundation has announced that the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi will host the national climax of the 2026 World Sickle Cell Awareness Day commemoration in Ghana.

The Foundation said the venue was secured with the support of KNUST management.

World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, marked globally on June 19, is dedicated to increasing public understanding of sickle cell disease and promoting preventive awareness.

FoSCel said it would lead the national event, bringing together students, academics, health professionals, policymakers, media practitioners and the general public to drive awareness and advocacy.

“Sickle cell disease remains a major public health concern in Ghana, and this event is aimed at deepening public understanding and promoting preventive action,” the Foundation said.

The Foundation noted that an estimated 15,000 to 18,000 babies are born with sickle cell disease in Ghana each year, underscoring the need for sustained awareness efforts.

“We are calling on government institutions, corporate organisations and development partners to support this initiative through sponsorship and collaboration,” FoSCel stated.

It also welcomed partnerships with organisations working in the sickle cell space to maximise national impact.

“By working together, we can strengthen advocacy, improve awareness and contribute to better outcomes for persons living with sickle cell disease,” the Foundation added.
