Societal expectations play a significant role in the underdiagnosis of mental health issues in men because they never feel the need to get frequent check-ups.

Medical Doctor at Everyday Medical Center, Richardson Edwin Annan, has emphasized that men are often expected to conform to traditional masculine norms, which can prevent them from seeking help when they need it most.

“From the moment men are born, there’s some way of life that has already been prescribed for them,” Dr. Annan explained on the GTV breakfast show. Men would not come to the hospital when the symptoms begin; they would wait till the symptoms become dire.

According to him, the reluctance to seek medical attention is not entirely their fault, but rather a result of societal pressures that encourage men to suppress their emotions.

He stated that the Akan adage “Men don’t cry” is a prime example of how societal expectations impact men’s mental health. Dr. Annan noted that this phrase often leads men to bottle up their emotions, rather than seeking help when they need it. Instead of shying away from men who are easily irritated, Dr. Annan encouraged people to draw near to them and offer support.

Dr. Annan further highlighted that depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, suicidal thoughts and substance abuse are common symptoms of mental health issues in men. He stressed the importance of men accepting that they can not do everything on their own but rather seek help from their loved ones and healthcare professionals.

Interestingly, Dr. Annan pointed out that mental health issues are more prevalent in females than males. However, he emphasized that these issues often go undiagnosed in men due to their reluctance to seek help.

By spreading awareness and breaking down these barriers, Dr. Annan hopes to encourage men to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed. By doing so, men can lead healthier, happier lives, and society can work towards creating a more supportive environment for everyone.
