The Minister for Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reassured Ghanaians that the country remains firmly in control of the COVID-19 situation, despite a recent surge in cases at the University of Ghana.
Speaking during a visit to University of Ghana Health Facilities to assess the situation, the Minister emphasized that no severe cases or deaths have been reported, and that effective treatment options are available.
‘’We do not have any severe case at hand and we’ve not recorded any deaths so I can assure you, the country is on top of issues. We even have a treatment for Covid so I can assure you it’s not dangerous as it was so no need for panic’’, he said while visiting a health facility at the University of Ghana to assess the situation.

The Minister’s statement comes after the University of Ghana Health Services Directorate issued a health alert on June 23, 2025, confirming several suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases within the university’s community.
In response, the University has suspended all social gatherings, including week celebrations and related activities, to curb the spread of the virus but lectures continue.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a localized outbreak of COVID-19 but emphasized that the reported cases are mild, with no hospital admissions so far.
While assuring the public that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent further transmission and effectively contain the outbreak, the GHS is urging continued vigilance. It has advised the public to strictly adhere to preventive protocols, including wearing face masks, maintaining physical distancing, and practicing regular handwashing.
The Health Service also noted that it is working closely with the University of Ghana authorities to monitor the situation, implement containment strategies, and assess the effectiveness of ongoing response efforts.
