The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare-Addo, has linked the rising cases of violent crimes, including murder and suicide among the youth, to substance abuse.
According to the Minister, many young people are turning to crime as a result of drug use.
“We believe strongly that the law must deal with those who commit crimes as it deems fit. However, one of the key things we’ve realized is that most of these violent crimes are happening because a lot of the youth are abusing substances,” Opare-Addo stated.
To tackle the issue, the Ministry has launched the “Red Means Stop” campaign, aimed at educating and sensitising young people on the dangers of drug abuse. The Minister stressed the importance of engaging closely with the youth and empowering them to make informed life choices.
As part of broader efforts to support the well-being of young people, the Ministry is working to establish counselling centres in all educational institutions.
“As part of our five thematic areas, the first thing we spoke about is the health and well-being of young people, and it’s one of the key things the Ministry is focusing on,” he added.
The Minister’s remarks were made during the Government Accountability Series, where he addressed the media on the progress of his Ministry’s programmes and initiatives.
