Market days in Ghana are characterised by huge vehicular and human traffic in and around market centers. This is because people from all walks of life come from far and near to trade.

Although this seems normal, that of Kasoa’s New market is alarming. Traffic in and around Kasoa virtually comes to a standstill. The gridlock is such that passengers of commercial vehicles at times are compelled to disembark and walk for the rest of the journey.

Kasoa has over the years been battling with traffic both at the old and new markets. Formerly, the old market used to experiences traffic congestion irrespective of whether the day is a market day or not. The new market however experiences traffic only on market days.

After the construction of a lorry station at the old market, some of the traders have moved to the new market bringing all attention to the new market. During market days at the new market, vehicles find it difficult to move compelling them to pick passengers by the road side.

This is because traders spill over onto the lorry station. The congestion has come about because most traders have refused to move into the new market. Some residents who spoke to GBC’s Radio Ghana said the situation is very bad and needs to be checked.

Some Drivers said the presence of traders spilling onto the road is affecting them and making business difficult. Some traders who occupy the lorry station said sales are poor inside the market.

These assertions were however refuted by others who said business was brisk inside the market. They pleaded with government to move all of them inside the market.

Commander of the Kasoa MTTD, DSP William Okyere Abisah, said his men are doing their possible best to control traffic. However, the Municipal Assembly is reneging on its responsibility to move the traders back into the market.

Efforts to get the Assembly to react to the allegation were met by an uncooperative MCE. The MCE chastised GBC’s reporter for failing to book an appointment.
