Ghanaian legend Asamoah Gyan has reflected on his enduring World Cup legacy, challenging the next generation of Black Stars players to surpass his historic milestone as Africa’s all-time top scorer with six goals.

The former captain views the record not as a barrier, but as a benchmark meant to be broken by emerging talents.

Gyan, who shone across four World Cup tournaments from Germany 2006 to Brazil 2014, expressed pride in his achievement while embracing progress in the sport.

“For me, records are set to be broken. So, personally, I count myself lucky to be at that level, to score six goals in World Cup history. The only African to score six goals in World Cup history,” he stated.

His goals embodied national hope, from dramatic group-stage strikes to key contributions in Ghana’s unforgettable 2010 quarter-final run.

Rather than clinging to the accolade, Gyan wishes the current crop well. “And yes, the record is there to be broken. So I wish this new generation well, to perform so well. One might come up and break the record,” he added.

As Ghana rebuilds ahead of the 2026 World Cup, facing Austria and Germany in friendlies this week, Gyan’s words serve as both inspiration and a gauntlet thrown down. His message underscores ambition rooted in belief, perfectly timed amid the Black Stars’ Vienna camp buzz, including Antoine Semenyo’s recent Carabao Cup triumph.
