The Chiefs and People of Adanwomase in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region have appealed to government to establish a factory in the town to produce kente for export under the One District, One Factory Policy.
The people believe this will help create jobs and attract tourists to the area, and also rake in foreign exchange.
The Chiefs and People of Adanwomase made the appeal during their Maiden Kente Festival.
The occasion was used to outdoor some new kente designs and commission an Electronic Loom and Warping Machine for weaving Kente.
Adanwomase is one of the communities in Ashanti that is noted for Kente weaving.Over the years Adanwomase has produced Kente designs which are used locally and internationally.
The designs include Fatia fata Nkrumah, Ohene afro hyen Aginginsu-Purification and Ohemaa Aba Ghana, which was specially made when Queen Elizabeth of England visited Ghana.
Queen Mother of Adanwomase Nana Korama Brimpomaa, said the festival is to foster unity among the people to ensure rapid development.
She said previously, teenagers in the area were taken through puberty rites and therefore teenage pregnancy was low, but now the situation is different.
The Ashanti Regional Tourism Manager, Peter Theophilus Acheampong commended the community for standing out as the cleanest attraction site in the region. He said if the community is supported to produce more Kente designs, it will curb the influx of foreign Kente.
Mr Acheampong added his voice to appeals for government to establish a factory to produce Kente for export to generate foreign exchange.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Kwabre East,Osei Asibey Bonsu said it is the hope of the Assembly that the people will come together to celebrate one big festival to showcase the area to the outside world.
He said if promoted, Kente weaving can create jobs for the youth.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwabre East, Francisca Oteng Mensah said there is a need for the Weavers to register their designs to derive revenue from it.
She advised them to do proper consultation on how to have their businesses registered to know how to go about it.
The Chiefs and People of Adanwomase have agreed to celebrate the Kente Festival, the last week of September, every year.
