The Ministry of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea espoused that drastic efforts are underway in some parts of the country to mitigate perennial flooding.

He explained that, the government has also put in place “result oriented measures to attract investment into the drainage and sewage sub-sectors of the country in order to address the associated problems”.

According to him, the World Bank has responded favorably to the calls of the Ministry, and it’s currently supporting the Greater Accra Climate Risk Integrated Drainage (GARID) Project to manage drainage and related problems within the Odaw basin.

The Minister in answering a parliamentary question asked by MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh Dompreh on ‘preparedness of the Ministry in permanently fixing the drainage and sewage challenges faced by the country’, he cited poor waste management—both solid and liquid, Building and construction on water ways among others as the cause of flooding in the country.

He further cautioned all to desist from the culture of damping garbage into drains.

“The upshot is that this subculture chokes the open drain, the mass of water runs off and translated into flooding.”

“Until we destroy this subculture, the situation that eats our meager budget will persist,” he added.
