The National Blood Service has made a passionate appeal for blood donations after it witnessed a 21 percent cut in donation over the last few months.

From January to May this year, the service had only 57 thousand units of blood donations as against 73 thousand units during the same period last year.

This means persons who may require blood to live may not get it and are likely to die. According to the Service, the situation has been compounded by the COVID-19 outbreak which has seen fewer people donating blood, but a lot more patients needing it.

This was announced by the CEO of the National Blood Service Dr Justina Ansah at the virtual commemoration of this year’s World Blood Donor Day held on the 14th of June every year.
