The Savanna Agricultural Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-SARI) with funding from the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) has unveiled a cowpea variety to farmers that will enable them to attain higher yields whilst reducing their cost of production in a sustainable environment.
The farmers, drawn from three communities (Tanina, Poyentanga and Nahaa), were introduced to the new cowpea alongside other popular improved varieties during a field day at Tanina in the Wa West District.
Welcoming the farmers to the field day, the head of division Dr George Mahhama, advised the farmers to use the opportunity to learn from the technologies they would be exposed to, especially the cash-making Pod Borer-Resistant (PBR) cowpea they would be learning more about.
Addressing the farmers and Agric Extension Agents (AEAs) on the field, a Research Scientist, Mr. Asieku Yahaya, at the Wa office of the CSIR-SARI, explained that the PBR cowpea is cost-effective to cultivate as compared to other legumes.
