The Ghana Police Service has assured residents, voters, and stakeholders in the Akwatia Constituency of full security coverage ahead of tomorrow’s by-election.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show during live coverage, ACP Theodore Hlormenu, Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, outlined detailed measures being rolled out to maintain peace and order throughout the exercise.
According to him, the police have mapped out the constituency to ensure visibility and quick response. “We have 119 police stations and are also deploying motorbikes within the area so we can respond swiftly. We have also established 21 checkpoints across the electoral areas to guarantee safety,” he said.
He stressed that the deployment was not only about protecting polling stations but also about ensuring that the markets, transport hubs, and other sensitive areas of public activity remain safe.
ACP Hlormenu added that the number of officers deployed has been increased compared to previous elections because of the high voter turnout expected in the constituency.
He revealed that highway patrols and additional snap checkpoints had been introduced, though these were not part of routine policing before the by-election.
“The police is here for everyone. We are providing security for voters, election officials, and the general public. We want people to have confidence that they can go out, cast their vote, and return safely,” he assured.
The Akwatia by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, follows the passing of the sitting MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, in July.
The seat, considered politically strategic, is expected to see a highly competitive contest between the NPP, NDC, and other parties.
