Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia Monday morning reviewed the 31st Ceremonial Change of Guard at the Jubilee House in Accra.

This is the second time the Vice President has performed this task as it is normally reviewed by the President as commander-in-chief.

The ceremonial parade which is an old tradition inherited from the British during colonialism has for the past hundred years remained the foundation of discipline in all armies.

The Change of Guard is a process involving new guards exchanging duty with the old ones. The ceremony, a quarterly event, is similar to that of the Buckingham Palace.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia witnessed the ceremony for the second time as the Reviewing Officer. The significance of the Change of Guard is to ensure alertness and readiness of the men in uniform at all times.

It is also to assess the strength of the soldiers for duty and ensure maximum security at the duty point among others. The Ghana Army takes over guard duties from the Ghana Air force for the next three months.

The Ghana Air force was in charge of Guard duties until the ceremony today. The new guards performed some drills to the delight of their audience.

The ceremony was witnessed by the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Opare, the Minister of Defense, Dominic Nitiwul, Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, Service Chiefs and top government functionaries, as well as school children from St. Albans International, Graceland International, Catholic Special Vocational, the Labone Senior High School, St. Xavier Senior High School and First Star Academy.

A final year Civil Engineering student of KNUST, Emily Otoo-Quayson who has undertaken various research works to curb challenges in the society was also present as well as the Dream Believe Achieve Network which volunteers time and resources for youth empowerment.

The old Guard Commander, Staff Sgt Asamoah Frank handed over duties to the New Guard Commander Staff Sgt Veronica Seshie.
