A former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye Danquah, has said former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, is the “variable” that can guarantee victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2028 general elections, stating that as a reason he has thrown his support behind him in the party’s presidential race.
Speaking in an interview on Citi News on Monday, August 25, 2025, Dr. Boakye Danquah argued that the party needs to introduce a new face and a strong leader to increase its chances of winning after President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure. He said the NPP has in the past presented candidates it believed could secure certain voting blocs but still lost.
“That is why I am with Kennedy Agyapong. The variable that must be introduced into the NPP as leader of the party after the January 31 election is Kennedy Agyapong. He is that variable that can win an election,” he said.
Dr. Boakye Danquah dismissed suggestions that religious or tribal considerations should influence the choice of a presidential candidate. He pointed out that President John Dramani Mahama, though a Christian, won massively in Muslim communities, proving that Ghanaians vote based on leadership qualities, not religious or ethnic identity.
He also questioned former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s claims that discussions about facts are often turned into tribal or religious issues, stressing that “no one ever looked at Dr. Bawumia’s tribe or religion to make him running mate or Vice President”.
Highlighting Kennedy Agyapong’s long parliamentary experience, Dr. Boakye Danquah said he has what it takes to lead both the NPP and Ghana. He argued that history shows many Ghanaian presidents, except a few like the late Jerry John Rawlings and John Evans Atta Mills, first served in Parliament before rising to the presidency.
“The idea that a candidate should be brought back multiple times is not what makes one win. It is about the value and leadership proposition. Kennedy Agyapong is a system MP, and a winnable candidate. That is why I believe he can lead us to victory in 2028,” he emphasised.
