The Northern Regional Directorate of the Electoral Commission says it has registered sixty-nine thousand (69,000) voters in the northern region after the first three days of the first phase of the registration exercise.
According to the Directorate, the region is recording an average of thirty thousand voters a day, adding that, the numbers will increase in the coming days as more people turn out to vote. The Regional Director of the Commission, Lucas Yiryel in an interview with Radio Ghana in Tamale, expressed satisfaction at the conduct of the registration exercise, which started on Tuesday (30th June, 2020).
He disclosed that the Commission has taken steps to address the difficulties encountered on the opening day of the registration exercise, especially in relation to observing social distance.
“We have directed that, every applicant who goes to the center will be given a number, the first fifty will be asked to stay, the rest will be asked to come around 12 or 1 o’clock, this is to reduce the number of people at the center so we can manage the social distance,” he explained.
The Northern Region has one thousand nine hundred and forty four (1,944) polling stations.
The EC has clustered these polling stations into three hundred and ninety five (395) centers for the ongoing registration exercise.
More than two hundred (200) clusters are taking part in the first phase of the ongoing registration exercise.
