A security analyst, Dr. Festus Aubyn, has cast doubt on the possibility of disbanding political vigilante groups in Ghana.

He said until political parties put their trust in the State Security Agencies, the talk on dissolving these groups will remain a political rhetoric.

He said the impunity with which the vigilante groups operate is because they have the backing of political parties.

Dr. Aubyn was speaking at the 10th Annual Interfaith Symposium in Accra organized by the Presbyterian Interfaith Research and Resource Centre.

The peace and security of the country is under threat as a result of the rise in political vigilantism. Concerns have been raised regarding the activities of political vigilante groups and the need to disband them.

A Security Expert with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Dr. Festus Aubyn, said the issue of vigilantism can be resolved by the provision of jobs for the youth. He also called on political parties to put their faith in the law enforcement agencies.

The symposium brought together Christians, Muslims and traditional leaders to discuss matters relating to good neighborliness, interreligious tolerance and peaceful co-existence.

Dr. Festus Aubyn said religious bodies have a key role to play in ensuring peace and security in the country.

The symposium focused on “Religion, Peace and Security in Ghana: Dynamics, Concerns and Responsibilities.”
