Out of the 30 doctors posted to the Eastern Region this year, only 18 of them picked up their appointment. 121 midwives and two medical herbalists have also picked up their appointment.

No Physician Assistant was posted to the region.

This was made known by the Regional Health Director, Dr Alberta Britwum Nyarkoh during the second meeting of the Regional Coordinating Council in Koforidua.

She said the region has 131 Health Centres with about half of them being manned by Physician Assistants.

Due to this situation, the Health Centres have been degraded to CHPS zones.

Dr. Britwum Nyarkoh said the National Health Insurance Authority is not paying them the tariffs befitting a Health Centre.

She noted that with the 809 CHPS zones in the region, only 320 have CHPS Compounds with 47 per cent of them having midwives.

She expressed worry about the inadequate Midwives to manage the facilities particularly in the hinterlands.
