The Electoral Commission, EC, has condemned the violence which has characterized the ongoing voter registration at some centers from the start of the exercise.

A statement issued by the Commission said these acts perpetrated by some political activists have the tendency to disrupt the country’s democratic system and breach the vigilante and related offences Act,2019, Act 999.

It stressed that the Act which prohibits violence by political parties and makes political vigilantism an offence is punishable by a prison term. To this end, the EC has cautioned perpetrators of violence at registration centres to put a stop to it.

Additionally, the EC tasked the Security Agencies to investigate the issue as a matter of urgency and bring the culprits to book.

The Commission also urged political parties to challenge an applicant’s eligibility through the appropriate means which is to fill a challenge form for it to be presented to the District Registration Review Committee for a ruling.

Meanwhile, Acting Public Relations Officer of the EC, Mrs. Sylvia Annor has asked aggrieved persons to follow due process instead of resorting to violence at the registration centers.

She said people should follow the clear rules indicating that firing arms to stop the registration was unnecessary and only creates problems for everyone.

She encouraged the public to patronize the exercise to ensure its success.
