The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensah says the use of guarantors to validate the citizenship of voters without any form or required documentation has been a tried and tested mechanism by the Commission.

Speaking at a media briefing ahead of today’s commencement of the registration for the new voter ID card, she said despite being burdensome, the guarantor system has been the better option over the years.

She however expressed optimism that this will be the last time such a means of guaranteeing the nationality of a Ghanaian will be deployed by the EC.

On conducting the registration in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mrs. Mensah said seven thousand health assistants have been deployed to be stationed at each centre. She said aside from the strict compliance to health protocols, special dispensation will be given to the elderly and other vulnerable groups.
