A former Minister of Trade and Industry, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has described Mr Alban Bagbin’s election as Speaker of the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic as a sign of new era in Ghana’s politics.

Speaking to the GNA in Accra, Mr Spio-Garbrah said Mr Bagbin’s election signals an end to the “Winner Takes All” syndrome.

He said with Mr Bagbin’s experience, he will be able to contribute to the nation’s democratic credentials saying it is not surprising some Parliamentarians, knowing his competency and capability, put their partisan affiliation aside and voted him in the interest of the nation.

Mr. Spio-Gabrah said the current political atmosphere must guide the President to appoint ministers on merit other than party affiliation.

He said the President needs to make public appointments that will be appreciated by all Ghanaians.

The Former Minister noted that once the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Agreement and other international companies have their headquarters in Ghana, appointments into public office should be in the national interest.
