Flt. Lt. Rawlings pays tribute to former Zimbabwe leader, Mugabe

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has paid tribute to Zimbabwe’s strongman ex-president, Robert Mugabe who died yesterday at age 95.

In a tweeted message, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, said, Robert Mugabe lived a dignified life for the black race.

“RIP Comrade Mugabe. You lived for the dignity of your fellow black. Your African pride, dignity and audacity were unassailable. Africa has lost a bold and noble Statesman. My condolences to the government and people of Zimbabwe.”

Robert Mugabe, the Zimbabwean independence icon turned authoritarian leader,was said to be receiving treatment in a hospital in Singapore since April.

The former president was praised for broadening access to health and education for the black majority.

But later years were marked by violent repression of his political opponents and Zimbabwe’s economic ruin.

He was ousted in a military coup in 2017 after 37 years in power.
