Ghanaians are heading to the polls this morning to elect a President and 275 Members of Parliament to steer the affairs of the country for the next four years.
A total of 17,027,655 registered voters are expected to cast their ballot in about 33,367 polling stations across the country.
Voting will commence at 7am and end at 5pm.
Twelve candidates are vying to be elected President of the country. They are; Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Christian Kwabena Andrews of Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).
The others are Dr. Henry Herbert Lartey of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Hassan Ayariga of All People’s Congress (APC), Percival Kofi Akpaloo of the Libral Party of Ghana (LPG), and David Apasera of the People’s National Congress (PNC). The rest are Brigitte Dzogbenuku of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and Alfred Asiedu Walker the Independent Candidate.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) says barring any impediment, it is determined to declare the election results 24 hours after the polls.
The commission further entreated the public to disregard any allegations of rigging and assertions of a flawed electoral process by any individual or political party since it is committed to conducting a free, fair, credible, transparent and peaceful election.
This is the third time the presidential candidates of the two major political parties, the NDC and NPP will be contesting each other.
Mr. Mahama won in 2012, while Nana Akufo-Addo defeated him in the 2016 polls.
