The First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has called for members and supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to overcome complacency and work hard with passion to retain the party in power, in the next year’s general election.
They should reach out to every voter – tell the success story of the government to every Ghanaian to convince them to vote overwhelmingly to renew its mandate.
The wife of the President was addressing the first ever national women’s conference of the party in Sekondi, in the Western region.
“Women on the move for victory 2020 and beyond” was the theme chosen for the two-day meeting.
The goal was to mobilize, equip the women with the right information and to unite them in readiness for the 2020 election campaign.
The conference brought together all women in leadership within the party including those serving in regional executive positions, constituency women organizers, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament (MPS), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and other political appointees.
It provided the platform for networking, strategizing and sharing ideas on how to substantially increase the party’s share of votes.
Mrs. Akufo-Addo underscored the important role women played in the development of the party, and the nation at large, and urged them to work to ensure victory for the NPP in the 2020 election.
Touching on the theme of the conference, she said it was “a call to battle, call of divine intervention” and asked that they should all rise up to the task, unite to move the party forward.
The First Lady said significant progress had been made since the party came to power, saying, the nation was moving in the right direction.
She added that within the last three years the party had recorded “sweet melodies” of free SHS, planting for food and jobs, one district one factory, restoration of teacher trainees allowance and a strong economy among others.
The government, she said, by its strong performance deserved to be given another term.
The Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare encouraged the women to sustain the conference and make it an annual event.
She also urged them to work hard and accept to make the needed sacrifices to retain the party in power.
They should go from door to door to help the people to have better understanding of the government’s policies and programmes and how these are helping to make things better for everybody.
National Women’s Organizer, Mrs. Kate Gyamfuah said it was in the interest of all Ghanaians, particularly women, that the government was retained to continue its pro-poor policies.
She said many who would otherwise had struggled to send their children to SHS had now been relieved of that headache.
Mr. Freddy Blay, the National Chairman, applauded the women for their resilience and commitment to the party and urged them to work even harder to ensure the party’s resounding victory in the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He said the national executives would continue to support the activities of the women’s wing for it to grow from strength to strength.
The National Secretary, John Boadu described the women’s wing of the party as the most vibrant and resilient pillar, which had held the party together all these years.
He asked them to use the conference to analyse and come up with resolutions that would enhance the growth of the party.
Wife of the Vice President, Hajia Samira Bawumia, Minister of Communication, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister for Railways Development, Joe Ghartey, First Vice-National Chairman, Rita Asobayire, the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah and his Deputy, Mrs. Eugenia Gifty Kusi, were among those present.
