Government to hold further engagement with operators of AMERI plant- Minister

Substantive Minister of Energy John Peter Amewu says his first priority is to further engage managers of the Ameri Plant on the power deal before government takes a final decision.

Mr. Amewu said the engagement will be done in an open and transparent manner to ensure that Ghana gets value for money.

The AMERI deal which was renegotiated by the Former Minister, Boakye Agyarko ended up in controversy which led to the dismissal of Mr. Agayrko.

Speaking to the  media after a handing-over ceremony at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Amewu said government is committed to protecting the public purse and therefore it  will ensure that Ghanaians benefit from all  agreements.

“We will engage them, Ameri as a company is an ongoing institution, they are rational like any other person or party, so in my administration we are going to engage them and what we will do will be the best for this country.”

Mr. Amewu however warned all those who are engaged in illegal electricity connection to be wary because he is coming after them.

He said government is losing so much revenue to illegal connection which he said is a top priority for him to end.

He said as he led the war on illegal mining he is going to lead the war on illegal electricity connections across the country.

He called on district directors who are superintending over some of these illegal connections to clampdown on the perpetrators before he begins his tour to inspect some of these illegal connections.

On the two percent fuel increase, the Minister of Energy John Peter Amewu said the increase is just marginal. He said the behaviour of the upstream sector is interesting and most consumers are aware.
