Members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, have joined other constituent organisations of the University in demanding an immediate dissolution of the Interim Management Committee constituted by government to run affairs of the KNUST for the next three months.

To demonstrate their seriousness, TEWU members Monday morning went on a four hour peaceful procession within the campus amidst brass band and ‘gyama, wielding placards bearing various messages.

The inscriptions included ‘No V.C. No Work’, ‘Nhyiraba Obiri Danso’, ‘Stop the Political Tricks’ and ‘TEWU Does Not Recognize the ‘IMC’’.

The protesters first converged on the Commercial area where they were first officially briefed by their leadership about happenings within the University since last week Monday and why TEWU is joining other interest groups on campus to demand reinstatement of the properly constituted governing Council while rejecting the IMC.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, Chairman of the local chapter of TEWU, Charles Arthur, insisted that the Union rejects outrightly the IMC and demand an immediate restoration of the University Council in accordance with the Statutes and regulations of the institution.

The TEWU Chairman cautioned that, there would be chaos and long term disruption of the current academic calendar should any attempt be made to remove Professor Akwasi Obiri Danso from office.

Meanwhile, the President of the University Students Association of Ghana, USAG, Albert Oppong Kesse says the Association is appalled about the brutalities meted out to KNUST students during the demonstration.

They are also unhappy about the strike by the University lecturers because it has the tendency to disrupt the academic calendar.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, before a news conference in Accra, Mr. Kesse called on the new council to expedite work on the early return of students and resumption of academic work.
