The Electoral Commission’s (EC) limited voter registration has taken off smoothly in the Volta Region.

At about 1330 hours when the Ghana News Agency visited the Regional Office of the EC long queues were formed with a total of 37 people having been successfully registered at the three stations set up for residents of Ho.

Some centres were also set up for people coming from Ho West District due to network connectivity challenges in the District, with mobile registration teams deployed to serve remote communities.

GNA learnt that three persons were successfully registered at the Ho West District centre by midday in a process that took an average of ten minutes for a person to be registered.

The Ho Municipal Electoral Officer,  Gloria Boahemaa Asante, told GNA the exercise kicked off at about 0800 hours instead of the scheduled 0700 hours due to the network challenges, necessitating the registrations to be processed offline.

She said the exercise was progressing and that the Commission had done extensive sensitization and produced a movement plan for its mobile registration teams to ensure no one was left out.

GNA observed that majority of applicants were youths who just turned 18, with some reporting at the centre as early as 0600 hours.

Lily Tetteh, a Senior High School leaver told GNA she was registering for the card for other uses other than voting and that the long queues had delayed her registration for hours.

Mercy Fafa Tabo, 18, said she was the first to report at the office for the exercise, but lamented that she had been called back to the EC office three times to reregister due to typographical errors.

The exercise runs from June 17 to July 07 between 0700 to 1800 hours daily, with applicants required to produce a valid identification document, or be guaranteed by two registered Ghanaians.
