Bill to allow voting for MMDCEs presented to parliament

The Ministry of Local Government And Rural Development has presented to parliament a bill on the amendment of some articles in the 1992 constitution.

The amendment when passed will allow Ghanaians to vote for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive, (MMDCEs’).

The article slated for amendments are Article 243(1) on the appointment of MMDCEs by the President and Article 55(3), which prohibits the involvement of political parties in district level elections.

A Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, O.B. Amoah, disclosed this at a retreat on “Multi-party participation in local governance in Ghana”, at Big Ada.

He emphasized the President’s commitment to have MMDCEs elected and for which reason the ministry was working had to meet all timelines.

The two-day event which took place over last Friday and Saturday was organized by the Institute of Democratic Governance, (IDEG) and was attended by Ministers of State, members of parliament (MPs) and some national executives of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP).
