The President, John Dramani Mahama, has revealed that African countries must redefine their development trajectory and break free from the shackles of “triple dependency” that undermine their sovereignty.
According to him, Africa needs to take its destiny into its own hands, citing dependency on external actors for security, donors for health and education systems, and suppliers of critical minerals while capturing little or no value as major obstacles to genuine sovereignty.
“Too many African countries remain trapped in what I describe as triple dependency,” he noted.
He stated, while addressing the Zambia National Assembly today, January 5, that Africa must reset the narrative through unity of action, self-reliance, and the leveraging of comparative advantages for industrial growth and economic transformation because the African continent has been rigged by global systems for a long time.
The President also demanded the redesign of outdated government systems, including greater representation in global institutions such as the UN Security Council.
“We’re calling for a rejigging of the global financial systems that have kept Africa in poverty and death. While we must work collectively to achieve these objectives, much depends on how we act locally.”
