The maiden Kofi Annan Peace and Security Forum has opened in Accra with a call for a renewed sense of purpose and strategy to help win the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in Africa.
President Akufo-Addo who opened the forum cautioned that no country, including Ghana is insulated from Terrorist attacks despite being a beacon of peace, stability and democracy in the sub- region.
He reiterated his desire to deepen religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence that exist between Christians and Muslims.
The Kofi Annan Peace and Security forum is part of efforts by KAIPTC to support Africa in the fight against terrorism.
Africa peace and Security is undergoing transformation and has become complex and fluid because of the activities of various extremists groups.
There is the need to reevaluate peacekeeping doctrines and mechanism and how Africa approaches its fight against terrorism.
The inaugural Kofi Annan Peace and Security forum which is in honour of the former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan was established to provide avenue for exchange of ideas to help address security issues on the continent.
Recommendations from the forum will be used to develop new training models and research form of fundraising activities by allegedly charitable agenda for the KAIPTC.
President Akufo-Addo says Ghana has adopted the world coordinated interagency approach which encourages the timely sharing of information and intelligence operational coordination and Joint strategy formulation and has proved essential towards ensuring the efficient execution of the country’s counter terrorism policy.
He noted that activities of terrorist and extremist groups in Ghana for now take the organizations, which deliver these funds to support extremist activities around the world.
He said last year, security agencies in Ghana had to disrupt the activities of groups supporting to raise funds for rohingya Muslims in Jama, which were for fundraising for Terror related activities.
On the need for the global call to action against terrorism, Ghana has signed and ratified a number of international instruments aimed at the prevention and suppression of international terrorism.
The contents of these instruments, President Akufo-Addo noted will serve as a guide in the formulation of counterterrorism policy, which seeks to prevent acts of terrorism in the country.
Special Representative and Head of UN office in West Africa and the Sahel, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, spoke about the need to fight terrorism in Africa.
Wife of the late Kofi Annan was pleased such a forum is being organised in memory of the late Kofi Annan.
A monument of Kofi Annan was unveiled at KAIPTC.
