Stakeholders in the Government and Labour sectors are divided on the decision to pay salaries to Presidential spouses.

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah had earlier stated that payment of allowances to spouses of Presidents and Vice Presidents is not a new phenomenon.

According to him, the allowances were instituted under  Kufuor administration, but were only being formalized by the current government.

Governance Analyst, Frederick Agyarko Oduro sees nothing wrong with paying them salaries.

Speaking to GBC News on the matter, Mr. Oduro stressed the need to take good care of the spouses to prevent them from engaging in corruption with the hope of living comfortably when they leave office.

Mr. Oduro also waded into the argument of an interest-free loan for MPs to purchase vehicles. He said the state should provide official vehicles to MPs just as is done for officials within the Executive and Judiciary.

Meanwhile Labour Analyst, Seth Abloso disagrees with the payment of salaries to the spouses of Presidents and Vice Presidents.

He described the move as a misrepresentation of Article 71 of the constitution.

Mr. Abloso wondered why spouses of the President and Vice, will be paid salaries back dated to 2017 when negotiations for the base pay of workers have stalled because of the low percentage increase proposed by government.
