Peace courts or centres will soon be set up in the Northern Region to settle disputes among political parties in the upcoming elections.

The proposed peace courts will be constituted by prominent people in society whose duty will be to identify trouble spots and rabble rousers.

The Upper West Regional Project officer of WANEP, Ghana, Aiden Sabie disclosed this at a stakeholder’s meeting in Tamale.

Mr Sabie mentioned the formation of an inter party dialogue which will solve misunderstanding among the youth.

Speaking on political violence in Ghana, Mr Sabie said political violence has been with Ghanaians since 1957.

He said 47 percent of national and local election since 1992 has recorded fierce violence adding that this increased from 47 percent in 2012 to 80 percent in 2016.

Mr. Sabie said there are competent institutions to manage election related conflicts adding that WANEP will roll out its strategy with stakeholders by January next year to start the election peace process.

Some participants cautioned the media to be circumspect in their reportage.
