The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong rejection of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct new polling station elections in 19 locations within the Ablekuma North constituency. Addressing the press today, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong, described the EC’s move as “unlawful, shocking, and disingenuous,” and called on the Commission to comply with a High Court order to complete the collation of results from the remaining three polling stations in the constituency.

In a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Accra, Justin Kodua expressed deep concern about what he described as a sudden “U-turn” by the EC, following months of legal directives and documented processes.

“The EC’s claim that 19 polling stations require a rerun because the scanned results were not verified by Presiding Officers is an afterthought. These results were accepted by both party agents and verified by the Commission,” Kodua stated.

He reminded the media that on January 4, 2025, the High Court directed the EC to complete collation in four disputed constituencies, including Ablekuma North. While the EC has since completed work in the other three constituencies; Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South, Ablekuma North remains unresolved, due in part to what the NPP described as “NDC-instigated violence.”

The NPP presented a detailed timeline of efforts by the EC to complete the Ablekuma North collation:
• December 21, 2024: 25 polling station results collated.
• January 5–8, 2025: An additional 34 polling station results collated across three sessions.
• June 2025: The EC, in written communication, confirmed only three polling stations remained.

The party argued that these figures have been consistent across statements from the EC, including during a Parliamentary appearance by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Bossman Asare on June 19, 2025, where he affirmed that only three polling stations were outstanding and that a rerun was not being considered at the time.

“So how did we suddenly jump from three to 19? And why is one of the three originally identified polling stations, Glory Land Hotel Odorkor (1), not even included in the 19 the EC wants to rerun?” Kodua questioned.

The NPP did not mince words, accusing the Electoral Commission of caving to pressure from the ruling NDC government. They cited public statements by NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah threatening the removal of the EC’s leadership.

“It’s clear the Commissioners are pandering to political threats and are trying to protect their jobs,” the General Secretary alleged.

The NPP further argued that only a court of competent jurisdiction can order a rerun of elections already conducted, and not the EC acting unilaterally. They cited Ghana’s Constitution, PNDCL 284, and C.I. 127, which govern public elections.

The party warned that allowing this precedent to stand would encourage political thuggery and undermine electoral integrity:

“If political parties can now disrupt collation centres, destroy pinksheets, and force the EC to conduct reruns, then future elections will be marred by chaos,” Kodua warned.

He cited multiple video footages of alleged NDC thugs vandalizing EC property, and accused the NDC of intentionally withholding their pinksheets for polling stations where they lost, while the NPP’s pinksheets had been destroyed in the melee.

The party is calling on:
• The EC to return to the path of legality and complete collation of the three polling station results as originally ordered.
• The Police to provide armed security to the EC as per the High Court’s mandate.
• Civil society, religious leaders, and peace advocates to speak out against what they term a “dangerous precedent.”

The NPP says it will challenge the EC’s directive in court and is confident that after full collation, their candidate Hon. Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh will be confirmed the winner with 34,613 votes, against 34,199 for the NDC candidate.

“No amount of political pressure or arm-twisting can overturn the will of the people of Ablekuma North,” the General Secretary concluded
