Pressure group Occupy Ghana has called on the Police to prosecute the Special Initiatives and Development Minister Hawa Koomson if investigations find her guilty in the shooting incident at the Kasoa voter registration centre.

In a statement, OccupyGhana said the use of force or violence is a crime under the Country’s laws, unless there is reasonable justification and within the strict bounds provided by law.

The statement said it is a crime to fire a weapon ‘in a town without lawful and necessary occasion, adding that possession of a firearm ‘without lawful excuse’ is a first-degree felony.

The group condemns all election-related violence and the inexplicable circumstances under which the Minister took a loaded weapon to the registration centre when she has police guard paid for by the state and whose job it is to protect her.

Further, the law that regulates the registration of voters also provides a process for challenging ineligible people who register or attempt to do so.

The Group said no individual has the power to prevent others from registering simply because they believe the law is being flouted.

It called on the police to quickly investigate the circumstances under which the incident occurred and bring any guilty party to book.
