President Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians to redefine their sense of responsibility to fulfill the dreams of the founding fathers. He called on all to step up and play a significant role in the nation’s development.
Speaking at the forecourt of the Jubilee House where the 64th Independence anniversary parade was held, President Akufo-Addo was optimistic of building a nation of hopes and opportunities and not despair and retrogression.
It is the first time in recent years Ghana’s independence parade is being organised at the seat of government. This is due to the Coronavirus pandemic which has necessitated strict social distancing protocols.
The usual long march by the security agencies, school children, labour unions and organised labour was missing.
The less than an hour ceremony saw a number of changes to the default programme known for decades.
Inspection of the parade by the President was also left out. But these changes did not prevent the Ghana Armed Forces and the other security agencies to display a spectacular drill to the admiration of President Akufo-Addo who is the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed forces, the Vice President and the invited guests.
After lighting the perpetual flame, there was a fly past by the Ghana Air force amid 21 gun shot.
President Akufo-Addo touched on the impact Covid-19 is having on lives and livelihood, citing the virtual independence parade for the first time in the nation’s history.
He urged Ghanaians to take the vaccine and not disregard the health and safety protocols.
President Akufo-Addo was optimistic that Ghana will be a shining example on the continent a year from today.
President Akufo-Addo asked the people to put their shoulders to wheel to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the founding fathers.
The Vice President, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, Chief Justice Anin Yeboah and some Ministers of state were present.
