The Convention Peoples Party, CPP says President Akuffo Addo’s address yesterday on the State of the Nation, does not reflect the true state of affairs in the country.

It says the first address by the President in his second term, was a repetition and recycled unfulfilled campaign promises, adding that most Ghanaians are unable to meet their basic needs, food security, and quality education and were expecting to hear the President address their concerns.

A statement signed by the General Secretary of the CPP, Nana Yaa Jantuah, said the unbearable hardship is worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of neo-liberal economic policies which the NPP government continues to implement.

It noted that the address among other things failed to elaborate and address the ballooning national debt which stands at 297 billion Ghana Cedis, representing close to 78 percent of the country’s GDP.

While applauding President Akufo Addo for the intervention of a 32-megawatt hydroelectric plant in the Northern part of Ghana, The Party is however disappointed that the address did not touch on the recent power outages and a semblance of load shedding at specific hours of the day, causing interruptions in daily routines as well as the debt stock of the Electricity Subsector of the Energy Sector.

It also questioned why Ghanaians are paying exorbitant prices for foodstuff in the market when the sector is said to have experienced no food shortages. The CPP said it is also highly disappointing that the President in his address did not touch on the issue of corruption and did not give any clear roadmap and commitment to fighting the canker. It said the true state of the nation is a gloomy picture without hope which does not meet the real needs of the people.

Consequently, the CPP is calling on Ghanaians to join the rank and file of the party to help change the fortunes of Ghanaians. It said a CPP government would meet the economic, social, health and educational aspirations of the people
