A communications team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper East Region, Miss Bakiva Monica, has commended President John Mahama for exercising his prerogative of mercy in the case involving Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, the acting Managing Director of the state-owned Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).
She described the President’s gesture as one that would further strengthen Ghana’s democratic culture.
“We thank His Excellency President John Mahama for pardoning Sammy Gyamfi because giving is a trademark of the GoldBod CEO, and that should not be misconstrued as a crime,” she said.
“We saw how the woman was following him for money to buy fuel. We thank the President for warning him and allowing him to go back and continue the good work he is doing,” she added.
A video recently circulated online shows Mr. Sammy Gyamfi giving out dollars to evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa. Mr. Gyamfi has described the act as a gesture of kindness to the needy. However, the incident drew widespread public criticism and raised concerns about ethical conduct in public office.
In response, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, summoned Mr. Gyamfi to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Mr. Gyamfi issued a public apology, which has been accepted by the President. He has been advised to exercise greater discretion in his public conduct.
Speaking exclusively to GBC News in Bolgatanga, Miss Bakiva also praised Mr. Gyamfi’s efforts in combating gold smuggling. She cited the recent arrest of foreign nationals who attempted to smuggle gold out of the country as an example of his commitment.
“We want someone who would work to bring a boost to our economy and that’s exactly what Sammy Gyamfi is doing. We are all witnesses to how National Security apprehended some foreigners who attempted to leave the country with some gold bars.
I am also confident that Sammy Gyamfi’s action would serve as a lesson to other appointees,” she concluded.
