Speaker urges defeated MPs to forge ahead for other opportunities

The Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye has urged the 40 defeated NPP Members of Parliament to put the past behind them and forge ahead for other political opportunities.

The speaker in a statement before, the commencement of public business on Tuesday, 23rd June 2020 reminded the defeated MPs that, “in this game called politics, you may win or loose and one must prepare for both, when going for re-election”.

He encouraged them to attend to the business of the house “with all seriousness and with all promptness”.

The speaker said, “we’re in a very competitive environment, once you win a fight, you prepare to loose another one, so that is the game”.

He however, called on them to let their supporters remain calm as he congratulated the winners and wished the losers better luck next time.

The Minority Leader and MP for Tamale South Haruna Iddrisu, in his contribution associated himself with the comments made by The Speaker.

He however, sympathized particularly with Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah and Alhaji Ben Abdullah as he also raised concerns over what he called politics of monitization.

He wanted national conversation on the future of Ghana’s democracy particularly on how money is being used to influence delegates in recent times.

On his part, the leader of Government Business and Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonso called on Political Parties to design a well-structured system to be used to elect people to Parliament to advert attrition rate of experienced MPs.

According to him, better MPs in the likes of S. K Alban Bagbin, Haruna, himself and co are not yesterday made.

He asked delegates to learn to renew mandate of experienced MPs.
