UK to support Ghana in plastic waste management

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Iain Walker, has reiterated the need for plastics to be dealt with.

He said the phenomenon is a global menace and must be addressed.

Mr. Walker said this when he paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah in Accra.

He expressed worry about how the ocean is filled with these plastics which can be used for other important products.

He said this is affecting the fishes in the sea, adding that the time for innovation is now.

The issue of plastic has become a worrisome trend to Ghana and many part of the world. The British High Commissioner’s visit to the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources was to discuss issues confronting sanitation and water resources and help find a lasting solution to the menace.

The use of plastics was key on the agenda. Mr. Iain Walker said the world should not sleep on this agenda.

He said the UK is mopping up efforts to solve this global challenge.

He gave an instance where banana leaves was used for packaging products instead of plastics in the UK, adding that it is more organic. He said the UK is committed to working with Ghana to avert the sanitation problem in the country.

The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah said government will not relent on its efforts to solve this phenomenon. He urged the private sector to collaborate to recycle plastic materials.

She said people should also use other innovative ways to do away with plastics, as other countries like Indonesia is doing.

The two countries called for a change in attitudes from citizens for improved waste management in world wide.
