President to deliver SONA on Thursday February 27

President John Dramani Mahama will on Thursday, February 27, present the State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament. SONA is a constitutional obligation and yearly tradition, where the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces reports on the status of the country, unveils the government’s agenda for the coming year, and proposes to Parliament certain legislative measures.

Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, states that the President shall deliver a message on the SONA to Parliament at the start of each session and before the dissolution of Parliament. It also imposes an obligation on Members of Parliament (MPs), the Speaker of Parliament and the Judiciary to receive the President’s SONA.

Presenting the Business Statement for the seventh week ending Friday, February 28, Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader made the announcement on the Floor of Parliament.

“…Mr Speaker, members are reminded that the President of the republic is scheduled to deliver a message of the State of the Nation on Thursday, February 27, 2025, in accordance with Article 67 of the Consitution” he said.

Mr Ayariga therefore urged MPs to be punctual and seated in the Chamber by 09:15 hours at the latest.
For the week’s business Mr Ayariga, also the Leader of Government Business of the House, and a National Democratic Congress MP for Bawku Central noted that six ministers had been scheduled by the Business Committee to respond to 23 questions.

He mentioned the Ministers of Finance; Energy, Gender, Children and Social Protection; Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry; Education and Roads and Highways who were expected to attend upon the House.

”Mr Speaker, in all six ministers are expected to attend upon the House to respond to 23 questions during the week. The questions are the following types, two urgent and 21 oral,” Mr Ayariga told the House.
