Students of the Ophthalmic Nursing School in Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, have called on government and stakeholders in the transport industry to resource Eye Centres at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, to give drivers a thorough eye screening.

They also suggested that drivers with eye problems be required to take their photo IDs , wearing eye glasses. That will enable the police to arrest drivers who are required to wear glasses but don’t.

The students made the call at a seminar organised by final year students of the school. In a presentation, Esi Amoah, a student called for regular eye check-up for drivers.
A key component for safe usage of the road is good eyesight, because the eyes are the light to the body.

However, according to research findings of students of the Ophthalmic Nursing School, not much has gone into that. It was against this background that the final year students of the School organised the seminar which brought together stakeholders in road safety.

Esi Amoah, a student refuted perception that drivers who wear glasses are not good. She also debunked suggestions that wearing eye glasses worsens vision. Rather they correct refractive errors and she encouraged drivers not to shy away from the use of glasses when recommended.

In a similar presentation, Alhamdu Mohammed Tipaya, also a student expressed worry that bad eye sight has not been targeted as being a contributory factor to road accidents.

Headmistress of the school, Stella Antwi-Boasiako asked the students to avail themselves for outreach programme to better the lives of the citizenry.

The students also asked motorists to desist from patronising services of middle men also known as ‘goro boys’ when acquiring licence in order to have their eyes tested.
