Political Analyst and Private Legal Practitioner, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers Esq has noted that the the call to remove the Office of the Special Prosecutor, OSP is a politically motivated move.

“The call for the Office of the Special Prosecutor to be scrapped is politically motivated”, he said.

During a panel discussion on GBC’s Current Agenda show on Saturday, December 6, 2025, Mr. Brako-Powers
argued that the OSP remains a vital institution in Ghana’s anti-corruption architecture and should not be targeted simply because of criticisms.

This follows recent development where some Members of Parliament, MPs are calling for its abolition, citing lack of achievements and duplication of roles with other agencies like the Attorney-General’s Department.
However, Mr. Brako-Powers believes that the office’s challenges are not grounds for scrapping it.

The controversy surrounding the OSP comes after the arrest and detention of lawyer Martin Kpebu, who criticized Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng’s actions. Mr. Kpebu’s detention sparked public outcry, with some accusing the OSP of abusing its powers.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and other MPs support abolishing the OSP, citing its failure to justify its existence and the need for a more effective anti-corruption framework. They propose redirecting the OSP’s budget to the Attorney-General’s Office to enhance its capacity to prosecute corruption cases.
