Mr Bernard Joe Appeah, a Management Consultant, has urged members of old students associations to stop using the associations for merry-making and support in the management and infrastructural development of the schools for academic excellence.

He said the associations were also to foster connectivity, build role models and responsible future adults for effective management of the country.

“It is regrettable to note that majority of these associations exist only for merry-making, baby naming ceremonies, birthday parties and funerals, which should not be the case,” he said.

Mr Appeah gave the advice when he addressed a homecoming programme organized by the Swedru School of Business Old Students Association (SOSA) at Agona Swedru in the Central Region.

It was aimed at raising funds to support infrastructural development of their alma mater – Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).

Mr Appeah charged the old students of SWESBUS to pull their resources together to build and improve structures at the School and that government alone could not provide everything to enhance effective teaching and learning.

“I served on the Board of Governors of SWESBUS as chairman and built the dining hall, the masters’ bungalows, among other things from my own resources although I was not an old boy of the school,” he said.

He expressed unhappiness about the recent low academic performance of the school in the 2018 West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Nine per cent of students of SWESBUS who sat for the examination qualified for university and other tertiary education.

Mr Appeah urged management of schools, parents, old students associations and teachers to build a formidable collaboration to help to produce quality students for the job market.

He called on the Ghana Education Service and the Agona West Municipal Education Directorate, to probe tutors and those found unfit for teaching should be weeded out, while the Board of Governors of SWESBUS should be reconstituted since they have over stayed their term.

He admonished students, especially females to desist from immorality and pre-marital sex, which could affect their education and should endeavor to model the lives of old students who had made it to higher positions in their professions.

Mr Appeah advised the students to take their studies seriously, while the teachers must also put up their best to improve on the academic performance of the students.

He implored parents to pay regularly visits to the schools to know the academic performance of their wards and encourage them to put their best in their education.

Among speakers at the function were Mr Obeng-Inkoom, an old boy and former Member of Parliament for Agona West, Ms Betty Essel, Agona West Municipal Director of Education and old student and a host of them.
