Volta/Oti Region: Disinfection of over 2800 Basic, Senior High and Tertiary Institutions begins

More than Two Thousand Seven Hundred Private and Public Basic Schools including 100 Public Second Cycle Schools in the Volta and Oti Regions are to be disinfected.

This are part of measures by the Ministry of Education to safeguard schools from the Covid-19 pandemic prior to their partial re-opening for Final Year Students to write their Examinations.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa announced this at a News Conference to commence the exercise at Ho, the Volta Regional capital.

President Akufo-Addo recently announced a partial reopening of schools for final year students for all levels of education in the country. This is to enable the students to return and to prepare for their final examinations. It has therefore become necessary for the education ministry and other stakeholders in the fight against the spread of the Covid 19 pandemic to safeguard the schools and protect the students before and during the reopening day of June 15, 2020.

In this regard, among other measures taken is the disinfection of private and public basic schools across the country to help eliminate the risk of infections. A total of two thousand six hundred and fifty-four private and public basic schools and 100 public second cycle schools in the Volta and Oti regions are expected to be disinfected.

The exercise which started today and will run through to June 30, and will be undertaken by private waste management company, Zoomlion.

Classrooms, dormitories, dining halls, Offices, auditoriums, compounds, frequently touched facilities and surfaces and the entire campuses of all beneficiary schools will be disinfected during the exercise.

At a news conference to announce the commencement of the exercise in the two regions, the Volta regional minister Dr. Archibald Letsa said twenty Tertiary Educational Institutions in the two regions will also be disinfected and charged all municipal and district chief executives to collaborate with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure a successful disinfection exercise in their various jurisdictions.
