All interested parties in the Upper West Region are grappling with the continuous fall in the standard of Education in the Region. To this end, a number of forums have been organised to help identify the challenges affecting education in the region and how to address them. One of the problems that have been continually identified is the lack of supervision of teaching and learning activities in the various schools.

To help address this challenge, government a few months ago provided Education Directorates across the country with vehicles. In addition, government has now provided 85 motorbikes to circuit supervisors in the Upper West Region.

The Acting Regional Director of Education, Godfrey Dongyeru, said although the motorbikes are inadequate, they will still help the various Municipal and District Education Directorates to undertake effective supervision.

“The number of circuit supervisors exceed 85 so I have reduced that of Wa East and Wa West [Districts] because they are close but for districts that are far away, places like Sissala East Municipal and Sissala West District, they have got they full consignment. It is our hope that they will be able to strengthen supervision. When we do that we will be able to improve performance,” he said.

Mr Dongyeru stressed that the performance of students at the BECE and WASSCE “have been so worrisome and so we hope that with these [motorbikes], we will be able to do a good job and realise the results”.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih urged the Education Directorates to ensure proper maintenance of the motorbikes. He said his interest in improving the standard of education ranks high amongst his priorities as a Regional Minister.

Dr Bin Salih said as part of government’s effort to address the many problems that face education, thousands of teachers are to be employed. Dr Bin Salih said his office is lobbying the Ministry of Education in order for the Upper West Region to receive a good number of newly employed teachers to help address the challenge of inadequate teaching staff in the region.

The Regional Chairman of Circuit Supervisors, MacDonald Baadannakuu, appealed to government for additional funding to maintain and fuel the motorbikes for effective supervision.
