Following West African Football Academy Sporting Club’s (WAFA SC) withdrawal from the National Division One League (DOL) in Zone 2 to fully focus on developing young football talents through the academy system in the Volta Region, the team has officially joined the Volta Regional Football Association at the Division Two (2) level.

Officials of the club have thus paid a courtesy call on the office of the Regional FA to officially introduce themselves after completing all documentations for a merger with Division Two Side, Mafi Kumasi Heroes.

The merger with Mafi Kumasi Heroes FC is essential to WAFA SC’s base in the region since the Academy moved from Gomoa Fetteh in the Central region to Fievie, near Sogakope in the Volta Region nine (9) years ago when the team made a return to Ghana Premier League in 2014.

In view of this, WAFA SC is now a Division Two Club in the Volta Region, they will take part in the upcoming 2023/24 Division Two League Season scheduled for December.

WAFA SC was relegated from 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season to the second-tier league and played in Zone 2 where they originally qualified for just a season but for their current location and proximity reasons they withdrew.

According to the Communications Director of the club, Emmanuel Adansi, affiliating with the Volta Regional Football Association would make more sense due to their current location and proximity.

“Geographically it makes sense to be affiliated with Volta FA, first of all, we are situated in the Volta Region so it gives us a sense of belonging” He said.

“Secondly, the Academy has a proximity advantage because almost all the affiliated clubs are within the region which takes away unnecessary traveling expenditures” He added.

Mr. Adansi added that the club is not worried about starting from the Division Two level because of the club’s developmental focus.

“WAFA is a developmental-oriented Club, so starting from scratch has never been a challenge for us. we always know how to start.”

“As a producer club, grassroots development has always been our object so we are very comfortable with starting the scratch.” Mr. Adansi said.

The Club’s Communication Director also revealed that the Academy would continue to impact and serve the people of the Volta Region with good and modern football games.

The 2023/24 Regional Division Two(2) League is set to commence on December 17, 2023
