Work is to commence on the uncompleted footbridges on the Madina-Adenta highway from next week following the recent spate of fatalities, the government has said.
“Work is to be done on an accelerated basis with multiple contractors to ensure quick completion,” that’s according to a statement from the inter-ministerial Committee on Roads and Highways, Transport and Interior.
The statement said: “this is in accordance with already commenced processes prior to the unfortunate incident that occurred on Thursday.”
A student of the West African Senior High School (WASS) at Adenta who was trying to cross the highway, was knocked down by a vehicle.
She was the latest to be hit by a car on the highway on Thursday afternoon.
Over 190 people have been knocked down on the stretch in 2018.
In recent times, residents have intensified protests over the lack of footbridges on the road in following multiple deaths in the past week.
After the Thursday accident, residents blocked the road and set fire to tyres.
There was a similar protest last Friday by some residents of Adenta Barrier after a resident was killed in a hit-and-run.
A middle-aged woman was also hit by a truck at Fire Stone earlier this week.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Roads and Highways, Transport and Interior said it has noted with regret, the frequent incident of road crashes and its resultant casualties on the Madina Adenta highway.

These incidents have been occasioned by high speeding vehicles and inadequate pedestrian crossing facilities including foot bridges.

The statement said alarmed as the Public has been on this matter, the Ministries and Agencies have been working in recent weeks to complete procurement processes and resume work on the bridges.

The Committee has therefore instructed the Greater Accra regional MTTD command of the Ghana Police Service to deploy men on the stretch to enforce the relevant road traffic regulations on speed limits, jaywalking and pedestrian crossing.

“Traffic signal lights and street lighting are also to be fixed to improve visibility on the corridor”.
