Asamoah Gyan, former captain of the Ghana national football team, has described Ghana’s opening game against the Panama national football team as the most important match for the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana national football team have been placed in Group L alongside the Panama, Croatia national football team, and England national football team for the tournament, which is set to begin in June.

Speaking on World Cup Central on Channel One TV on Friday, May 8, 2026, Asamoah Gyan said Ghana’s chances of advancing from the group stage could depend heavily on the result of their opening match.

He described the encounter against the Panama as the most crucial fixture in the group, despite the presence of stronger opponents such as the England national football team.

Gyan also acknowledged that while Ghana national football team may appear favourites on paper, the team must be careful not to underestimate their Central American opponents.

He added that although Ghana may have the statistical advantage, it remains unclear what Panama could bring into the contest.

Asamoah Gyan described Group L as a difficult group and emphasised that securing a positive result against the Panama could greatly strengthen Ghana’s confidence going into the remaining matches.

He noted that although the group presents a tough challenge, overcoming Panama in the opening fixture could create momentum for the Ghana national football team in their other games.

The former Sunderland A.F.C. striker also advised the Black Stars to take the tournament one game at a time, with a strong focus on securing maximum points in their first match.

“But against Panama, we have to make sure that we get the three points. We shouldn’t settle for anything less. We should go for that win,” he said.
