Ghana Premier League champions Bibiani Gold Stars kicked off their 2025 GHALCA Top 4 tournament campaign with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Asante Kotoko on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
The GHALCA Top 4 tournament showcases the top four Premier League clubs from last season and runs until Sunday, August 24. The opener, held at the University of Ghana Stadium, did not disappoint fans who turned out in numbers to support their clubs.
The match started intensely with Asante Kotoko taking an early lead in the 16th minute through striker Albert Amoah. The goal energized Kotoko and put the pressure on the defending champions.
However, Gold Stars did not let the setback disrupt their composure or game plan as they patiently sought opportunities to level the score.
Their persistence paid off in the 22nd minute when Gold Stars earned a penalty kick, a decision met with vehement protests from the Kotoko players.
Referee’s call stood firm, and Samuel Atta Kumi confidently converted from the spot to equalize the match. The first half ended with both teams level, setting the stage for an intense second half.
The second half saw fierce competition, with both sides striving to gain the upper hand. The defining moment came when Kotoko defender Henry Ansu inadvertently scored an own goal, handing Bibiani Gold Stars a crucial 2-1 lead.
Gold Stars held on to this advantage until the final whistle, securing their first win in the tournament. Bibiani Gold Stars’ comeback victory lays down an early marker for the competition ahead.
