Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah has signalled his willingness to represent Ghana at the international level, ending years of uncertainty and distance from the English senior team.
The 25-year-old, born in Lewisham to Ghanaian parents, has long been on the radar of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), which has made concerted efforts to persuade him to join the Black Stars.
Nketiah rose through England’s youth ranks and earned a senior call-up in 2023 for matches against Scotland and Ukraine. However, he did not make the match-day squad for either fixture and has not been considered for the England team since. Despite a promising youth career, his senior international prospects with England appear to have faded.
In an interview on ‘The Beautiful Game’ podcast, Nketiah expressed a shift in perspective regarding his international future.
He stated: “When I was younger, representing England was an option after progressing through the youth system. But if Ghana invites me, then I’ll be there.” The statement marks a significant turning point in Ghana’s efforts to secure his commitment.
A ‘potential’ switch to Ghana could provide a much-needed boost for the Black Stars, especially as they seek reliable goal scorers ahead of upcoming international fixtures. Nketiah has struggled for form at Crystal Palace this season, registering just one goal and one assist in 25 appearances.
While it remains to be seen whether Ghana will officially pursue his eligibility, fans are hopeful that Nketiah is ready to embrace the opportunity. His decision could prove pivotal for both his career and Ghana’s attacking strength in future competitions.
