Former Germany international Gerald Asamoah has been awarded the prestigious Federal Cross of Merit, one of Germany’s highest honours, recognizing his exceptional role as a bridge builder between Ghana and Germany.
The award was presented to Asamoah by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during an official visit to Accra, Ghana.
President Steinmeier praised Asamoah for his humanitarian work through the Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Disease, which he founded in 2007.
The foundation focuses on supporting children with heart defects, especially in Ghana, by facilitating visits from German medical teams who perform life-saving operations.
The German leader also highlighted Asamoah’s advocacy for social inclusion and his ambassadorial role in the “School Without Racism” initiative.
Born in Ghana, Asamoah moved to Germany at age 12, overcoming a personal heart condition to enjoy a distinguished football career.
He played for clubs including Hannover 96 and Schalke 04 and was part of Germany’s squad at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where the team finished as runners-up.
His journey from a young Ghanaian immigrant to a celebrated athlete and philanthropist has inspired many.
Emotionally receiving the honour, Asamoah expressed disbelief and gratitude, describing the award as both a joy and a motivation to continue his charitable work.
He acknowledged the recognition as a sign that his efforts are making a meaningful impact, saying, “When God blesses someone, you have to try to give something back.”
This accolade not only cements Asamoah’s legacy as a footballing great but also acknowledges his selfless contributions to humanity, strengthening ties between two nations and setting an example for future generations in sport and philanthropy.
