The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has entered a new phase of leadership following the official handover from former president Ben Nunoo Mensah to newly elected president Richard Akpokavie. The ceremony, held at the Olympic House in Ridge, Accra, on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, marked a significant moment in the country’s sports administration.
Industry observers see the transition as an opportunity for the GOC to re-strategize and mobilize resources for greater impact in the sports sector.
During the ceremony, outgoing president Nunoo Mensah highlighted the importance of building on past achievements, particularly the continuation of projects like the OlympiAfrica Initiative. He emphasized the need for stability and continuity, even as the organization embraces fresh leadership and renewed goals. The handover of operational items and strategic documents was intended to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted transition.
New president Richard Akpokavie pledged to preserve and expand the legacy of his predecessor, calling for increased collaboration from stakeholders including sports federations, the media, and the government. Many sports enthusiasts believe that harnessing collective efforts will be key to advancing Ghana’s sporting ambitions in the years ahead.
The event also featured the formal handover of financial and asset records, underscoring the GOC’s commitment to transparency and accountability. Incoming treasurer Evans Yeboah received the financial documents, while secretary-general Mohammed Muniru expressed optimism about future collaborations and partnerships. These procedural measures reflect Ghana’s broader push for good governance in its bid to attract more support and investment in sports development.
